Apple re-launches iPhone 3GS in India

Apple counters cheap Android smartphones with its factory-unlocked version of iPhone 3GS

Apple has divulged plans to re-launch its iPhone 3GS, which was then only available through network operators like Vodafone and Airtel. The new unlocked version will come with 8GB internal storage at a very reasonable price of Rs. 19,990.

Apple's latest iOS version 4.3 supports iPhone 3GS, making it a worthy opponent to similarly-priced Android devices with better hardware. Apple has also said that iOS 5 will work on iPhone 3GS though it is likely that not all features will be supported.

iPhone 3GS was originally released in June 2009. Powered by a 600Mhz processor, it sports a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen (320 x 480 pixels). However, as it happens in the case of Apple products, the hardware specifications can be misleading when it comes to performance and usability.

For now, Airtel and Aircel will reportedly offer the iPhone 3GS while others will join the league after sometime. Moreover, users now have the flexibility to change operators as per choice. No doubt, India has become a dumping ground for Apple but on the brighter side, the move is likely to please everyone put off by the exorbitant pricing of the iPhone. This initiative can possibly attract more people to Apple’s products.

On the specs front, the iPhone 3GS comes with connectivity features such as 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS with A-GPS support, EDGE/GPRS and Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP (headset support only). Available in 8/16/32 GB capacities, iPhone 3GS supports 256 MB RAM and includes a 3.15 megapixel camera with autofocus capabilities.

The new version, which directly competes with Samsung Nexus S, misses out on a few features like Facetime, but you can’t have everything, right?

Let’s see if the wise move could enable Apple to befriend its Indian consumers in the competitive smartphone segment. Now it seems like Apple wants to get into the mid-ranged market segment with this announcement.
